One of the most memorable moments on my recent tour of Bangkok is the visit to the oldest and biggest temple there. Its name is Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwara Mahaviharn, but it is more commonly known as Wat Pho. In English, it is known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.
I visited Wat Pho during a tour with Beautiful Planet. It is just one of the many tourist attractions we visit, but it is one that I remember very much, because the Temple of the Reclining Buddha is so big, with so many buildings to visit. The temple complex covers an area of about 20 acres. It is located near the Chao Phraya River. Inside the walled compound of Wat Pho are different pavilions. Inside these are Buddha images in different poses. The cloisters, or corridors, that surround some of the temple halls are also lined with seated as well as standing Buddha statue.
Wat Pho is even older than Bangkok itself. There was already a Buddhist shrine here in the 16th century, before Bangkok became the capital of Thailand. Over time, the temple was expanded again and again, until it eventually attain its present size.
Of course, the highlight of a visit to Wat Pho is entering the chapel of the Reclining Buddha. Although it is not the biggest reclining Buddha in the world, the Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho is certainly a breathtaking sight. It is entirely covered in gold leaf, so that it glimmers from head to foot. The statue as well as the hall itself is kept in immaculate condition. You can make a circle around the Buddha, silently admiring the statue and its surroundings.
Even if you are not a Buddhist, a visit to Wat Pho is a wonderful experience for anybody who enjoys culture and beautiful surroundings. Be sure to include a visit to Wat Pho when you book your trip to Bangkok! You can view a selection of
