Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is home to the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred object in the kingdom. According to legend, it was created in India in 43 BC in the Indian city of Patna. The statue was rediscovered hidden inside the wall of a temple in Chiang Rai. Since then it has been taken to different cities including Chiang Mai, Lampang, Luang Prabang and Vientiane.
When the future King Rama I captured Vientiane in 1779, he took the statue back to Bangkok, where he installed it in the temple within the compound of his royal palace, in his newly established capital, Bangkok. The temple becomes known today as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
